Visible Spectrum - The portion of the electro-magnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye

DPI - Dots Per Inch - used when printing (sometimes mistaken with PPI)

PPI – Pixels Per Inch – when relating to an image on a monitor

Pixel - Digital Picture Element – dots that make up an image

Mega-Pixel - 1 million pixels

CCD - Charge-Coupled Device, electronic light sensor used in digital cameras

Print Ready - An image saved at the correct print size and color space for printing – dependent upon the final output print medium.

Flash - Device producing an instantaneous flash of light, usually at 5500K

White Balance - Correcting the color balance to achieve a neutral tone. Setting the WB tells the camera what is white.

Depth of field - Distance in front and behind the subject that appears in focus.

F-Stop - Relationship of the diameter of the entrance pupil of the lens (aperture) with its focal length

Aperture – The hole or diameter of the hole in the lens through which light is admitted

Shutter Speed - The length of time the shutter is held open when taking a picture.

Gobo - GO Before Optics – something used to block light from hitting an undesired area. Also refers to a light cover which casts a pattern from the light.

Bounce Card - A card (usually white) used to bounce light into the subject

Clipping Path - A path used (in Photoshop) to cut out an image from the background.

Image Layer - In Photoshop, the Layer that contains the actual image

Web Ready - An RGB image at 72 PPI for publication on the internet

Streaming Video - Media that is being viewed while it is being delivered

Stroke - In graphics, a line drawn around the edge of an object or the actual thickness of the line.
